Say Yes and No to Have More Money

Say Yes and No to Have More Money

Do you know how to say yes and no? This image by John Hain illustrates some of the feelings and actions congruent with our “yes” and our “no.”

Can You Say Yes and No When It Comes to Money?

Well, can you? Be honest. If you can, celebrate! And celebrate yourself! Comment here how you do it.

If you can’t say a firm, clear “no” when it comes to money, you’ve already answered the rest of the question: you also can’t say a true “yes.” This is true with everything in your life, in my humble opinion.  Living presents us with so many opportunities, openings, invitations, and challenges. We respond to each of them. I’m not saying we must respond or we get to respond, I’m saying we already do respond.

We respond to every aspect of our lives.  We are always responding.

Choice: The Final Frontier

This is a Star Trek joke. “Space: the final frontier” is that show’s tagline. But given how radical is the notion that we are always responding and thus choosing, in every moment of our lives, I feel like choice might just be considered many people’s final frontier.

Choice: is it a yes? or a no? Do you know?

How To Choose

First, notice that you are always responding. This means you are always choosing. There are always infinitely many ways any aspect of your life can turn out. One major influencer is YOU.

So the first step in how to choose is to notice you are always already choosing.

If you don’t believe me, mess around with it. In a situation where the stakes are low, choose weirdly. Choose something or in a way you wouldn’t normally.

Then notice the difference.

Notice you were always already choosing. You can try this with higher-stakes stuff once you get comfortable with the whole thing.

How to say “Yes” and “No”

Basically, choosing is saying “yes” and “no.” A lot of people act like one is better than the other. I think they are pretty much yin and yang complements of each other. I can always keep my heart open, no matter what is going on. But that’s not the same thing as–with my heart open–taking responsibility for an aspect of my life by saying “no.” Heart-opening feels like it’s always “yes” because it’s always yes, I will deal with this situation with an open heart. And sometimes, saying “no” is the way I will deal with it!

Practice makes perfect.

Now Try It With Money

Again, play around with it when the stakes are low. Try spending. Try not spending. Notice your responses. Are you in alignment with yourself? or are some parts of you out of alignment–that is, in conflict when you spend/don’t spend?

Notice: This is especially useful at the holidays.

As you begin this process, and get good at it, you will notice that you have more money. Believe me? Don’t believe me? Tell us in a comment to this post!

I use a monthly budget to make my decision about money. I still leave some flexibility for unexpected expenses like needing to get the kids some clothes. I also build into the budget things that we always do with our money like go out to eat even when we are trying to be on a tight budget giving ourselves some built-in treats makes it easier to stick with the plan.

Danielle, you are so smart. I love the sensitive way you include people’s _feelings about money. I guess I wondered, how does it _feel_ for you all to operate this way? In essence, you are adopting a family policy about “yes” and “no” when it comes to money.
